Dance Days Festival to ‘shake up’ Chania, Crete in July

The 14th International Festival of Contemporary Dance “Chania Dance Days” will brighten up the summer atmosphere in Chania, Crete with lively performances, workshopsvideo dance screenings, conferencesand events for all ages.

Dance Days Chania was founded in 2011 by “Syn-Kinisi” Association of expressive dance during a socio-economic and cultural crisis in Crete. The aim is to welcome artists, choreographers and dancers from all over the world.

This year the festival wants to focus on various choreographic And creative approaches within the contemporary dance scene and offers a platform to both emerging and established artists.

By July 20 to 31residents and visitors can experience performances throughout the city, while amateur And professional artists will have the opportunity to network through seminars and workshops led by leading filmmakers.

The Mikis Theodorakis Theatrethe Centre for Mediterranean Architecture and various outdoor spaces are transformed into improvised stages where artists show their skills and enchant the audience with their rhythm.

Highlights of the program include:

LocationTropicaJuly 20, 7:00 p.m., Honolulu Area: The site-specific performance “LocaTropica” explores the historicity of entertainment venues, emphasizing the experiential impact they have on a local community.

Control your Monster, July 20-23, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: With this workshop the duo brings The Informals challenges dancers to face their inner demons and step out of their comfort zone.

Achronic fracture – performance project with and for adults aged 65+July 20-27: The achronic fractures project focuses on the anatomical, biological and psychosocial transformations of the maturing body, to explore the concepts of fracture and resilience in a tangible way.

Exhibition of children’s creations “My body “speaks””July 21-31, Theater/Foyer “Mikis Theodorakis”, 11am-2pm and 7pm-9pm: This teacher-led educational program introduces children to concepts such as love, acceptance, empathy, trust and inclusion through word and emotion games.

The othersJuly 22, 9:00 PM, Mikis Theodorakis Theater: “The Others” is the story of four people living in a strangely isolated world. A living hell of plastic, completely devoid of other living beings and surrounded by impenetrable, translucent screens.

RelaxtoEruptJuly 23 & 24, 1:30-4:00pm: The RelaxtoErupt workshop focuses on how dissociated and available the body can be while training complex movement patterns. It also explores the possibilities of handstands and acrobatic work through daily exposure.

Repertoire masterclass, July 30, 10am-1pm: The workshop is based on physical skills and repertoire and offers participants the opportunity to experience the contemporary dance company’s BODHI PROJECT repertoire firsthand by working directly with company members.

Camille (Laboratory in the Shadow)July 30, 7:30 am, Center for Mediterranean Architecture: During the residency called “Laboratory in the Shadow” Livia Balazova works simultaneously with the materialization of the work and its destruction.

The event is supported by the Region of Crete and the Municipality of Chania. Some acts on the programme are open to the public upon reservation, while others require a ticket. More information about the event can be found on the website www.dancedays.gr.
