A third Test against Ireland would have thrilled fans

As we light the fire and prepare for the Springboks’ first rugby test match against Portugal in Bloemfontein, you may be wondering why there was no third test match against Ireland this weekend.

With the series tied at 1-1, a third meeting between the two countries would undoubtedly have been a sure thing.

The Boks won the first Test match in Loftus two weeks ago 27-20 and the Irish bounced back with a narrow 25-24 victory in Durban last weekend.

There is not much difference between the two teams, although the Irish have been the better of the four-time world champions since 2017.

After all, these are the teams that are number 1 and 2 in the world rankings.

We’re not the only ones hungry for more. Even though New Zealand were too good for England in their two-Test series, it was compelling, evenly matched rugby, while Australia had to dig deep against Wales to win the series 2-0, and Argentina and France also drew, reinforcing calls for a three-Test series.

We don’t want to shortchange Portugal, because last year during the World Cup they showed that they are an increasingly better team.

It is certainly good for the sport and on paper it is a good plan by World Rugby to raise the profile of the second division teams.

But if you’re honest, would you rather watch the deciding Irish series match or a Bok B team playing Portugal?
