WASHINGTON: US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has vowed to end the war in Ukraine and bring peace to the world if he wins the November 5 presidential election.

Trump made the remarks during a “very good” telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In a message on Truth Social, he promised to end the war between Kiev and Moscow through negotiations.

Zelenskiy also reported his conversation with Trump and thanked for the US military aid. But he did not refer to efforts to end the 28-month conflict in a message on social media platform X.

Trump has said he will end the war in Ukraine before he takes office in January. He has also said that if he had been in office when the Kremlin sent troops to Ukraine in February 2022, the war would not have happened.

In his post on Truth Social, Trump said that as president he will “bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives.”

“Both sides can come together and make an agreement that ends the violence and paves the way for prosperity,” Trump said.

While Trump has made few tangible policy proposals, he said Reuters in an interview last year that Ukraine might have to cede some territory to reach a peace deal.

In his message, Zelensky wrote that he congratulated Trump on his nomination as the Republican presidential candidate and condemned the attempted assassination of him last week.

“I wish him strength and absolute security in the future,” Zelenskiy said.

“I have noted the critical support of both parties and both chambers of the United States government for protecting the freedom and independence of our country.”

Ukraine, he said, “will always be grateful to the United States for helping us strengthen our ability to resist Russian terror. Russian attacks on our cities and towns continue every day.”

Zelenskiy rejects negotiations with Russia on ending the conflict as long as Russian troops remain in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president has proposed a peace plan, which was re-presented last month at a “world summit” to which Russia was not invited. The plan calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of Ukraine’s borders from the 1991 period, when the Soviet Union still existed.

Russian troops occupy about 20% of Ukrainian territory. Moscow’s forces have made gradual gains along a 1,000 km (600 mi) front in the east of the country since capturing the key city of Avdiivka in February.
