Spanish star Unai Simon will be out for at least four months after undergoing surgery on a persistent wrist injury.

The Athletic Club goalkeeper confirmed during the 2024 European Championship that he played in the interest of the selection despite the pain threshold.

Simon’s performances played a key role in Spain’s title win at Euro 2024, but the decision on his injury has already been made.

Despite rumours of interest from the Saudi Pro League, Simon signed a contract extension to remain in Bilbao before joining the Spain squad for Euro 2024.

However, the possibility of surgery remains a concern and he will miss the start of the national campaign in August.

Estimates of his return are unconfirmed, with two months expected before he can train again and a total absence from club and country of probably four months.

According to Marca, Simon is not expected to return to Athletic Club until after the season break, meaning he will miss the first half of the La Liga season.

In addition to his absence from the club, Simon will also miss Spain’s six matches in the 2024 UEFA Nations League, which will be played from September to November.
