Lamine Yamal makes history with stunning Euros strike

Spain reached the final of the European Championship with a 2-1 victory over France, with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal becoming the youngest goalscorer at a major tournament.

France took an early lead when Randal Kolo Muani headed in a cross from Kylian Mbappé, who was playing without a mask, before Yamal had a moment of brilliance in the 21st minute. Dani Olmo scored what would prove to be the winning goal four minutes later.

Spain, chasing a record fourth European Championship title, will play either England or the Netherlands in Berlin in the final on Monday.

They will play each other on Thursday in Dortmund (NZT).

Lamine Yamal celebrates his goal against France in the first semi-final of Euro 2024.

There was surprise in Munich when Mbappé took to the field without the mask he has been wearing since breaking his nose in France’s opening group match at Euro 2024.

Mbappé complained that the mask was in his way. Removing the mask seemed to have an immediate effect, as in the ninth minute he provided the opening goal with a tempting cross to the far post. Randal Kolo Muani headed the ball in.

That was the first goal France scored at Euro 2024 that wasn’t a penalty or an own goal. Fortunately for Les Bleus, they had also been exceptionally good at the back, conceding just one goal, a retaken penalty by Poland’s Robert Lewandowski in the group stage.

But Yamal scored a stunning equaliser in the 21st minute to become the youngest player to score at a men’s European Championship or World Cup, curling the ball past Mike Maignan from 25 yards and into the net via the left post.

And Spain turned the game around four minutes later when Olmo’s shot was turned into his own net by French defender Jules Koundé. It was originally ruled an own goal by UEFA, but was later awarded to Olmo.

France had most of the ball possession in the second half, but were unable to convert it into a success.

Théo Hernández should have done better when he fired a good chance over the bar just before the end, and Mbappé did the same with four minutes left.

Spain could have extended their lead between those two chances, but another powerful shot from Yamal went just over the bar.
