Manchester United to make final decision on Harry Maguire’s departure this summer

The 31-year-old England centre-back could be sold if Manchester United can find a buyer as the ex-Leicester player is in the final year of his contract and the club wants to move on.

Manchester United are planning to sell Harry Maguire this summer if they can find a buyer.

The England centre-back left almost 12 months ago, before a potential move to West Ham fell through. Maguire’s decision to stay at Old Trafford paid off as he proved many of his critics wrong and re-established himself in Erik ten Hag’s team. He even won a Premier League Player of the Month award as he nearly returned to his best, despite missing United’s FA Cup final through injury and the club suffering their worst ever Premier League finish.

But Maguire is entering the final year of his contract and the Red Devils risk losing the former Leicester star for free next summer unless they cash in now.

Ten Hag is keen to sign Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, but if the deal goes through, Maguire’s future at Old Trafford will once again come under fire.

The 31-year-old is believed to have admirers in Italy, where fellow player and former United team-mate Chris Smalling is doing extremely well at AS Roma.

Maguire is currently struggling to regain his fitness after missing the European Championships with a calf injury, but reports suggest his club are planning to offload him for the second time in a row.

Raphael Varane has already left on a free transfer and the club is also open to offers for Victor Lindelof.

Lisandro Martinez returned at the end of the season and will be first choice next season, while Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is the target. But United consider the Toffees’ £70m valuation far too high and have subsequently turned to De Ligt, who was bottom of the pecking order at Bayern and captained Ten Hag at his former club Ajax.
