Maria Sakkari prepares for Wimbledon third round clash – The Greek Herald

Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari has reached the third round at Wimbledon after beating Arantxa Rus 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday evening.

The first set was quite exciting, with Sakkari saving her two break points, one in the fifth game (2-2, 30-40) and one in the seventh game (3-3, 30-40). She capitalized on her first break point in the crucial twelfth game and won the set 7-5.

In the 2nd set it was easier for the best Greek tennis player, who was not threatened at all on her serve. She threatened to break early and finally managed to win the last three games of the match in the 8th game and finish it in 89 minutes.

The victory helps Sakkari avoid another early exit at Grand Slams, as the Greek has not played in the second week of a major tournament since 2021. It is her best result since the 2023 Australian Open.

Sakkari, number 9, will now face wildcard candidate Emma Raducanu.
