England v Denmark LIVE: team news and latest updates for Euro 2024 ahead of the crunch clash

Success for England can’t all rest on Bellingham, says Gareth Southgate, original video M254544

England take on Denmark in their second Euro 2024 match in Group C, knowing victory will send the Three Lions into the knockout stages.

Gareth Southgate’s side put in an unconvincing performance on Sunday to beat Serbia 1-0 and can expect a tougher test from a Danish side including Manchester United duo Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund. Eriksen scored as the Danes took the lead against Slovenia in their opening match, but a late equalizer saw the match end 1–1.

Much of the talk since England’s first match has focused on the roles of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden, and how they fit into the team, but Southgate says he is left out and is expected to be in a similar line-up will stay. to the match that started well against Serbia but faded dramatically in the second half, hoping for a better performance in Frankfurt today.

Southgate calls a special meeting for top players before the test in Denmark

“There will be a story around a player, a few players, after every England game,” Southgate said. “This is a different world than the one you experience at clubs. The players as a collective recognize that now, after the past few days. We talked to them about it. It is rare for them to win a match at their club and experience what they have been through in recent days.

“I have to make sure that I can guide them through that, make them understand it and recognize that it is the reality of our world, but we should not be fooled by it. “We are in a good position, we know we want to play better, there are a lot of things we have done very well and we are heading into tomorrow’s game.”

Southgate calls a special meeting for top players before the test in Denmark

Gareth Southgate has told his young England squad to ignore any criticism as they held a specific meeting on excessive supervision before the second match of Euro 2024 against Denmark.

England opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Serbia, although the subdued nature of the performance was criticized. The aim is to ensure that they are further focused on the match in Frankfurt against Denmark.

England vs Denmark talking points: 50 not out for Kieran Trippier

Kieran Trippier will mark half a century of England caps if he starts in Frankfurt as expected.

The Newcastle defender operates as a left back, while Luke Shaw is still struggling to return to full fitness. He has not played for Manchester United since suffering a hamstring injury in February.

Trippier is a more than capable deputy and one of the men Southgate has relied on at the helm in all four major tournaments, but he will need to perform strongly again if he is to retain his place once Shaw is ready for action.

England vs Denmark talking points: fan friction

England supporters will be hoping for a much smoother ride when they make the trip to Frankfurt after experiencing problems during the previous match in Gelsenkirchen.

The travel chaos before and after the match against Serbia left some fans stranded in and around the stadium, unable to continue their journey once they arrived back in the city center.

With Deutsche Bank Park home to Bundesliga team Eintracht Frankfurt, better connected fans will be optimistic about a better all-round experience.

England vs Denmark talking points: Danes seeking revenge after paying fine

England defeated Denmark in extra-time in the Euro 2020 semi-finals, coming from behind to win 2-1 in controversial circumstances.

Mikkel Damsgaard’s free-kick had given the Danes the lead at an expectant Wembley, but Simon Kjaer’s own goal put England level and the match lasted another 30 minutes.

There, England were awarded a soft penalty as Joakim Maehle was deemed to have fouled Raheem Sterling. Harry Kane’s penalty was saved, but he turned the rebound over to send his country through to the final.

Denmark has not forgotten the decision. Head coach Kasper Hjulmand said: “Maybe some players can get something out of that.”

England vs Denmark talking points: Bellingham gets his Phil or Foden

Another dilemma Southgate must solve is how to slot two of his best players into the starting XI without cutting any of their wings.

Jude Bellingham was the match winner against Serbia and arguably England’s standout player, while Foden was on the periphery for much of the game as he continued his battle to take his club form with Manchester City to the international stage.

Southgate insisted after the match that the pair can co-exist, but if they don’t click soon there could be comparisons to the Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard issue that has plagued a number of his predecessors.

England vs Denmark talking points: Trent ending?

Southgate’s most notable decision for the match against Serbia was the call to deploy Trent Alexander-Arnold alongside Declan Rice in midfield.

Liverpool right-back Alexander-Arnold revealed after the win that the England coaching staff have been working with him for more than a year.

However, his performance divided opinion and he was replaced by Conor Gallagher for the final 20 minutes, so it remains to be seen whether Southgate sticks to the plan or abandons it at the first opportunity.

England are chasing chemistry as Denmark is chasing revenge at Euro 2024, with an advantage

That’s something Southgate now insists on every match because “it’s an important part of our team’s psychological preparation” for the “story” of any occasion, but it’s more distinctive for this one. Denmark is on fire. Their side are constantly talking about the penalty given in England’s 2-1 win in the Euro 2020 semi-final at Wembley, and want to right that “injustice”.

The goalscorer Harry Kane is still there, of course, but the player who was criticized for apparently diving is not there. Raheem Sterling is one of three of England’s front six from that match who will not play in Frankfurt as Southgate tries to fuse a new chemistry. It still seemed elusive given the 1-0 win over Serbia. The manager said his staff have “challenged everyone to take that next step” in terms of performance in this game.
