BP makes gas discovery in the Barents Sea

Aker BP has made a gas discovery in exploration well 7324/6-2 – ‘Ferdinand nord’ – in the Barents Sea.

This is the first well in extraction permit 1170, which was awarded at the Awards in Predefined Areas in 2022 (APA 2021). The well was drilled by the Scarabeo 8 drilling platform.

Preliminary estimates indicate that the size of the discovery is between 0.52 and 0.75 million standard cubic meters (Sm3) of recoverable oil equivalent (oe). This corresponds to 3.3 – 4.7 million bbls oe

The licensees are assessing the discovery together with other discoveries and prospects in the area for possible development.

Geological information

The primary research objective for the well was to demonstrate petroleum in Middle Jurassic to Upper Triassic reservoir rocks in the Stø and Fruholmen Formations. The secondary exploration objective for the well was to demonstrate petroleum in Upper Triassic reservoir rocks in the Snadd Formation.

Well 7324/6-2 encountered a gas column of 12 meters in length in two sandstone layers of a total of 10.5 meters in the Stø formation, with good to very good reservoir quality. No gas/water contact was found.
The well encountered no reservoir rock in the Fruholmen Formation.

Above the secondary exploration target, a 6 meter gas column was encountered in the Snadd Formation in a sandstone layer of moderate reservoir quality. No gas/water contact was found.

Well 7324/6-2 encountered the secondary exploration target in the Snadd Formation totaling approximately 40 meters of sandstone of poor reservoir quality, with trace hydrocarbons.

The well was not formation tested, but extensive data collection and sampling was conducted.

Well 7324/6-2 was drilled to a vertical depth of 1246 meters below sea level and terminated in the Upper Triassic Snadd Formation.

The water depth at the site is 422 meters. The well is permanently closed and abandoned.
