Arda Güler stars in Turkey’s 3-1 win over Georgia

Dortmund: A fiery Turkey team took the first step towards a solid Euro 2024 campaign as they defeated Georgia 3-1 in one of the best matches of the tournament so far. The team started on the front foot and a goal from outside the penalty area by Ayhan hit the post in the 11th minute of the match. It was an end-to-end match with both sides producing a flurry of attacks.

Mert Muldur scored a thunderous volley from outside the penalty area to give the Turks the lead in the 25th minute. The team also doubled their lead minutes later, but was ruled out for offside.

Georgia scored their first ever goal in a major tournament and the stadium went wild in the 32nd minute as Georges Mikauatadze scored a historic goal for the country, leading to the match being level before the half-time whistle. There was a lot of talk about the Real Madrid prodigy and the 19-year-old did not let his hype go in vain as he became the youngest ever goalscorer on his debut in the history of the European UEFA competition.

His brilliant strike came in the 65th minute of the match when he hit a powerful shot that curled into the top left corner of the goal, leaving the keeper with no chance to save it.

Despite the 2-1 lead, Turkey were never comfortable in the match as Georgia really put their foot on the pedal in the final minutes of the game. Chaos ensued as Turkey cleared the ball off the line on two close chances after Davitashvili’s effort was cleared off the line.

In the ensuing corner, Georgia’s goalkeeper came forward to try to equalize, but a counter-attack saw Akturkoglu run the length of the field, making it 3–1. Turkey will face Portugal in their next match, while Georgia will face the Czech Republic. IANS
