BELGIUM EXAMPLE: KNOWN ERRORS

Domenico Tedesco took over the Belgian national team after exiting the group stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and was tasked with developing the failed ‘golden generation’ led by Roberto Martinez. The Belgians have proven since his appointment that they are functional and difficult to play against, but that was undone in their opener.

After just six minutes, Ivan Schranz made a defensive mistake to give the Slovaks a shock lead. Despite Belgium huffing and puffing for the rest of the match and conceding two goals from Romelu Lukaku, they were unable to find a route. back in the game. That means the pressure is really on the top seeds of Group E.

ROMANIA EXAMPLE: A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

Having entered the tournament thanks to a goalless draw against Liechtenstein and Bulgaria, which followed a qualifying campaign in which Romania scored just fifteen goals in ten matches, six of which were against Andorra, they previously put three past Ukraine. Monday was perhaps a bigger shock.

Nicolae Stanciu scored the Romanians’ opener in that game with an excellent long-range strike after a mistake by Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. Shortly after half-time it was 2-0 when Razvan Marin produced his own long-range shot, again with Lunin at fault, before Denis Dragus tapped in a third after a neat move between Stanciu and Dennis Man.

BELGIUM TEAM NEWS: FINDING A FORMULA

Belgium were unbalanced and inconsistent from the start against Slovakia and Domenico Tedesco could well make the decision to bring back both Jan Vertonghen and Arthur Theate due to injury problems. Youri Tielemans and Johan Bakayoko can also come in to give the Belgian some more drive and incision in the final third.

FORECAST XI (4-2-3-1): Casteels; Castagne, Faes, Vertonghen, Theate; Tielemans, Onana; Bakayoko, De Bruyne, Doku; Lukaku

NOT AVAILABLE:

Doubtful: Vertonghen (injured), Theate (injured)

ROMANIA TEAM NEWS: REPETITION FOR ROMANIA

Romania went into the opener without striker Denis Alibec, but his replacement, Denis Dragus, performed well and scored a goal. Changes were made in the second half, with Alexandru Cicaldau and Valentin Mihaila staking their claim, but it seems unusual for Edward Iordanescu to make any changes to his starting XI.

FORECAST XI (4-2-3-1): Nita; Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Bancu; R.Marin, M.Marin; Man, Stanciu, Coman; Dragus

NOT AVAILABLE: Alibec (injured)

BELGIUM USA ROMANIA PREDICTION

Had Monday not taken place this would have looked like one of the more one-sided matches in the UEFA EURO 2024 group stage, but now there is a real chance that Romania could progress to the round of 16 and put Belgium on the brink of elimination. Belgium have created and shown enough to have recently beaten Slovakia and will expect to put that right, while Romania, especially defensively, certainly cannot reach the same level as Radu Dragusin and Andrei Burca recently. Romania might be able to weaken Belgium to some extent, but the Red Devils would certainly have to get away from their target here.
