Halle Berry carries the Olympic torch through the streets of Cannes, Entertainment News

Halle Berry brought a touch of Hollywood glamor to the Olympic torch relay by carrying the flame through the streets of Cannes.

The actress lit her torch on the steps of the Palais des Festivals building in the French city on Tuesday (June 18) alongside Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux, carrying the Olympic flame along the famous Promenade de la Croisette before she presented it. over to three-time Olympic gold medal-winning snowboarder Shaun White.

The torch relay took place during the 2024 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity – which had to be temporarily halted to make way for the ceremonial passing of the flame.

The torch relay takes place ahead of the Summer Games in Paris and other pallbearers include Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc, as well as Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco.

The flame is lit in Olympia, Greece – the ancestral home of the Olympic Games – and travels around the world to the city where the games take place.

Once the relay reaches Paris, the flame will be used to light a cauldron during the opening ceremony on July 26. This remains lit for the duration of the games until it is extinguished during the closing ceremony.

The opening ceremony will make history as it is the first time the event will not be held in a stadium. Instead, it will stretch across the River Seine in Paris and feature more than 3,000 dancers along the city’s bridges.

It takes place at sunset and lasts about four hours.

Theater director Thomas Jolly will take charge of the opening ceremony and he told Le Parisien newspaper that he faced many challenges along the way.

He said: “There has never been an opening ceremony held outside a stadium. There is no model, it is absolute creation…

“(Regarding the dancers on the bridges) we were told that anyone doing the same step at the same time would compromise the strength of the bridge…

“I wanted to build an upside-down Eiffel Tower. I thought it would be nice to light the Olympic flame. But that was not feasible.”
