While those still searching for their personal style may spend their free time scouring their closet to discover their signature “three words,” Kirsten Dunst is staunchly steadfast about hers: little black dresses. The actress has made the ever-elegant ‘LBD’ a permanent part of her uniform, with her latest appearance proving her loyalty to the silhouette.

Dunst presented an award to the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race at the Critics Choice Real TV Awards in Los Angeles earlier this week. To do this, she picked a new seasonal slip from Givenchy’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection, presented during Paris Fashion Week.

The collection was the first without creative director Matthew M. Williams at the helm, with the atelier looking to the French Maison’s eternal muse, Audrey Hepburn, for sartorial inspiration. Of course, Hubert de Givenchy (and therefore the house by extension) is the designer the most famous ‘LBDs’ in sartorial history: the charmeuse satin cocktail dress worn in 1961 Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

From the moment Hepburn – or in this case Holly Golightly – stepped out of a taxi in New York City – tiara in her updo and with a black coffee and croissant in hand – to look longingly through the windows of Tiffany & Co’s landmark boutique staring down 5th Avenue, Givenchy cemented their legacy as one of Prime Maison’s peddling LBDs. (The other is Chanel, the opulence who invented design, as you may recall).

But 63 years later, on the West Coast, Dunst’s contemporary version indisputably holds a candle to Hepburn’s flame.

Considering Dunst’s recent turn to the Côte d’Azur in honor of Yorgos Lanthimos’ release Types of kindness at the Cannes Film Festival with her husband (and star of the film) Jesse Plemons, it should come as no surprise that the film veteran pays tribute to the glamor of old Hollywood.

The piece is wistful, yes, but also fresh in combining two of the season’s biggest trends. The dress, which is Look 41 if you’re curious, has a delicate evening shape made from gossamer, sheer fabric. Spiderweb-thin straps and a satin scoop neck flowed into a body-grazing dress adorned with inorganic embroidery crafted with iridescent thread and an asymmetrical train.

As we’ve seen with the renewed interest in Kate Moss’ slip dress, ’90s style is once again in the spotlight. Here, Dunst’s interpretation combined the sheer clothing and stealth wealth trends in one simple piece. And with Dunst, the textbook example of 90s style – see: her angelic white prairie dresses in Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides– who better to model this look than her?
