Germany defeated Hungary 2-0 to reach the last 16 of the European Championship – TheCitizen

Hosts Germany on Wednesday became the first team to qualify for the last 16 of Euro 2024 after Jamal Musiala’s controversial goal and Ilkay Gündogan strike in a 2-0 win over enterprising Hungary.

The draw between Croatia and Albania earlier and the situation in Group C means there will be at least two third-placed sides who cannot match Germany’s six points.

The four best third-placed teams from six groups would qualify for the knockout stages alongside each top two.

Germany’s 5-1 defeat by Scotland lit up the opening of the tournament and it was no surprise that Julian Nagelsmann retained the same starting line-up.

Hungary, which lost 3-1 to Switzerland in the first match, started well, but Germany got the opener halfway through the first half.

Musiala secured his second of the tournament after good work from captain Gündogan.

Hungary appealed for a foul by Gündogan in the penalty area before withdrawing the ball, but a video review allowed the goal.

Hungary continued to threaten, but Gündogan settled matters after 67 minutes when he curled in a low cross from left back Maximilian Mittelstädt.

Manuel Neuer was kept busy in his 17th European Championship appearance as he moved level with ex-Italy icon Gianluigi Buffon as goalkeeper with the most European Championship appearances.

Marco Rossi’s team also had a goal disallowed for offside.

Hungary’s hopes of progress are slim, but they will meet Scotland, who will later play Switzerland in the other Group A match. – dpa/NAN.
